Step back in time to October 1988, when a small but passionate group of individuals united to form the Great Plains Blacksmith Association. Co-founders Steve Hurlock and Rick Plough envisioned a sanctuary for aspiring metal artists—a place to master age-old blacksmithing techniques, access invaluable tools and resources, and delve into the rich history of the craft.
Our beginnings were as eclectic as our craft, with meetings held in a variety of locations—members' workshops, the atmospheric Old Cowtown Museum, and even the local burger joint. Over the years, CSMA has been graced by the talents of renowned blacksmiths from across the nation, each sharing their unique skills through workshops and demonstrations.
In 1990, we were presented with an extraordinary opportunity to rebuild the historic Ward Blacksmith Shop in Haysville, Kansas. This project provided a permanent home for our members and became a catalyst for growth and learning. With support from state grants, we reincarnated the old structure into a modern-day haven for artisans.
Our journey took a devastating turn on May 5, 1999, when a tornado swept through Haysville, leveling not just our shop but also significant portions of the historic town. Yet, like the metals we forge, we emerged stronger. By 2003, thanks to insurance funds and undying resilience, the Ward Blacksmith Shop was rebuilt and ready to fan the embers of creativity once more.
In 2007, we embraced our expanding scope, rebranding ourselves as Central States Metal Artisans to honor the diverse interests of our growing community. Whether it's blacksmithing, silversmithing, foundry work, or machining, CSMA offers something for every metal artisan.
Membership is open to anyone captivated by the allure of metal arts. As we continue to forge ahead, we welcome you to join us in shaping a future as bright as molten metal.
